Hill Side Academy in Endarasha, Nyeri, was engulfed in a horrific blaze late last night, claiming the lives of 16 young pupils and leaving 14 others severely injured.
The deadly fire, which broke out in the early hours, tore through the school's dormitory with devastating speed and intensity.
Police Spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango confirmed the catastrophic incident, describing it as one of the most harrowing school tragedies in Kenya’s recent history.
"We are investigating the cause of the fire, but our immediate focus is on ensuring the safety of the survivors and providing counseling to the grieving families," she said.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing desperate cries for help as flames consumed the dormitory, the fire raging with such ferocity that it was visible from miles away.
Rescue operations continued through the night, as emergency teams battled both the flames and the panic-stricken crowd of parents who had gathered in shock and disbelief.
