It has come to the attention of authorities that most
butchers in Kenya are adding a poisonous chemical to their meat. The
preservative chemical by the name Sodium metabisulphate is a white powdery
chemical commonly known as “dawa ya nyama”.The chemical is usually mixed with
water and smeared on meat which has started to loose its red colour. It gives
back the meat its fresh colour duping unsuspecting customers.
According to laboratory test carried on meat from markets
and butcheries in Nairobi and its surrounding areas, over 98 milligrams of this
chemical per Kilogram was detected
